Stop Drowning in Tutorials: You Don't Need Another Course

I want to tell you about a particular kind of busy that feels like progress but is not. It looks like this: multiple browser tabs open at once. A Coursera course at 60% completion. A YouTube playlist on project management with 14 videos left. A LinkedIn Learning certificate you started three weeks ago and haven't touched since.

You are consuming constantly. You feel like you are working toward something. And yet nothing is actually moving.

I lived in that version of trying for longer than I would like to admit. When I arrived in Canada and started thinking seriously about transitioning into tech, I defaulted to what felt logical: learn more, get more credentials, fill what I assumed were the gaps.

The problem was that I was diagnosing the wrong issue. I did not have a knowledge gap. I had a translation gap.

In my five years running a makeup artistry business in Nigeria, I had done things that mapped directly to Business Analysis work. I managed client expectations through every stage of a service delivery. I identified inefficiencies in how my bookings were being handled and built systems to fix them. I communicated across different types of people with different needs and priorities.

That is stakeholder management. That is process improvement. That is communication across diverse stakeholder groups.

But I did not know how to say it that way. So I kept looking for courses to fill a gap that was not actually there.

The moment someone helped me map what I had already done onto what Business Analysis roles actually require, everything shifted. Not because I had learned something new, but because I had finally seen something old in a new light.

If you have been collecting courses and certifications and still not gaining traction, I want to offer you a different question to sit with: Not "what do I still need to learn?" but "what have I already done, and what is it actually called?"

That question is where the real work starts.
